Three popular Afrikaans word artists are to perform at the Afrikaanse Taalmuseum in Paarl in celebration of Language Day on Thursday 11 August 2016. It is the fourth year that this event is held in collaboration with the Wynland Dameskring.
This year’s theme is “Pure Paarl Plesier”. The programme includes a poetry reading by radio presenter Margot Luyt, a performance by opera singer and TV presenter Lynelle Kenned, as well as an excerpt from the production “Ballade vir ‘n Backtrack” by Paarl musicians André Terblanché and Winand Grundling.
“Taaldag” (Language Day) is celebrated annually to commemorate the founding of the Genootskap van Regte Afrikaners (GRA) (Association of True Afrikaners) on 14 August 1875. The GRA’s aim was to formalise Afrikaans as a written language. They published the first Afrikaans newspaper, Die Afrikaanse Patriot, in 1876.
The function starts at 19:00 in the Historium Conference Centre next to the Afrikaanse Taalmuseum in Pastorie Avenue. Limited space available. Tickets at R100 are available from the Wynland Dameskring (tel. 021 8631422/0824142278).
Tickets sales are in aid of the Dameskring’s bursary fund for needy Afrikaans students and the Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en -monument’s reading project for children, “Laat ons Lees!” Guests are encouraged to donate an Afrikaans children’s book, new or secondhand, in support of this project.
