Strauss & Co Fine Wine Auctions, a ground-breaking joint venture with leading online fine wine merchant Wine Cellar (WineCellar.co.za) and expert sommelier Higgo Jacobs, is set to host ‘Fine Wine Week’ in September – a week of unprecedented wine experiences from 10 – 13 September – preceding its highly anticipated first Cape Town Auction on Saturday 14 September.

Following the successful inaugural June auction in Johannesburg, this second larger edition Strauss & Co Fine Wine Auction held at The Westin Hotel will include iconic international wines and rare vintages of South Africa’s finest wines. In the lead-up to the auction, a series of fine wine experiences will highlight the most remarkable lots to go under the hammer. See Winecellar.co.za for all the event information and bookings.

First Growth Bordeaux

Among these experiences is the Marquis Event, a hedonistic ‘First Growth Bordeaux’ dinner at FYN restaurant, highlighting the 1998 First Growth lot. Master of Wine Tim Aktin will host a public tasting of his 95+ point wines, poured by SA’s leading winemakers themselves. Sommelier Higgo Jacobs and Wine Cellar Director Roland Peens will present a Fine Wine Workshop and finally, none other than leading SA winemaker Eben Sadie will host a once-in-a-lifetime vertical tasting of his iconic red, Columella.

Featuring Bordeaux purchased en-primeur and only released at 21 years of age, this very special dinner at Cape Town’s finest new ‘downtown and sky-high’ restaurant by Peter Tempelhoff showcases the luxurious marquis lot featuring 2 bottles each of the 1998s from Chateaux Petrus, Cheval-Blanc, Lafite-Rothschild, Mouton-Rothschild, Margaux and Latour. We start this exceptional food and wine journey with the already legendary Dom Perignon 2008. The six First Growth Bordeaux will then be presented by Sommelier Higgo Jacobs and Wine Cellar Director Roland Peens. With scores from Robert Parker ranging up to 100 points, 1998 was a fine vintage, especially on the Right-Bank. This once-in-a-life-time tasting of mature Bordeaux will be accompanied by Peter Templehoff’s cuisine at FYN Restaurant where South Africa’s wild freedom is tempered by the rigours of contemporary cuisine to create a restaurant at the edge. A Jeroboam of St Julien Second Growth Ducru-Beaucaillou, also from 1998, will also be served along with Chateau d’Yquem 1998 for the dessert courses.
